Barcelona captain and current world footballer of the year Lionel Messi is rumored to be on his way out of the club after becoming frustrated with the way the club is currently being run. With his contract set to expire at the end of next season, Messsi has reportedly put talks over a new contract on hold. This many say is due to differences the captain has with the Barcelona president Joseph Bartomeu and the clubs public relations arm, over a series of leaks linking him to the sacking of coach Ernesto Valverde earlier this year. According to the ESPN report Messi is also frustrated over the lack of quality in the squad.
However, the disagreement between Messi and the Barcelona board began over the reduction in wages after the the global coronavirus pandemic crippled competitive sports on the planet. The spanish press insisted that the board put “extra pressure” on the players to take a salary cut.
In March, the Barcelona first-team players announced that they had agreed to take a 70% pay cut as well as make contributions to the club to ensure that staff of the club are able to collect 100% of their salaries while the situation lasted. The players however pointed out the fact that the board also pressured them into “doing something that we were always going to do”. Messi, being the captain is was said to have been infuriated by the unnecessary pressure which painted the players in a bad light.
Coupled with the decline in the quality in the Barcelona team over the last few seasons and the political influence that has dominated the management of the club, these disagreement is said to have pushed messi towards the exit door and his decision to stall talks over a new contract is as telling as it gets.
For Many fans of the Spanish league, the exit of Lionel Messi will be a major blow to the league while others believe it is an opportunity for Messi to prove himself outside of La Liga. The unending argument on who is better between between Juventus star Christiano Ronaldo and Messi has often time being nestled on the fact that the former has played in various leagues and proven himself while messi is considered to be a Barcelona man.
It remains to be seen if Messi will eventually leave Barcelona considering the fact that it is not the first time that exit rumours will be aired around the Argentine. If he chooses to leave however, he would not be short of suitors from across the world. Messi with over 700 career goals is the “GOAT” to many fans around the world and many a manager will definitely agree and will be willing to pay top dollar to have him adorn their club jerseys.
